Beau Travail (1999) Claire Denis Loosely based on Herman Melville’s novella Billy Budd, Claire Denis’ film follows Galoup, an ex-Chief Adjutant of the French Foreign Legion, as he laments over the events that precede his court marshalling. His memories oscillate around the repressed desire, jealousy and ultimately violence that is fostered in him by the arrival of a new recruit. Set in the mid 1990’s against the backdrop of the French Foreign Legion’s presence in Djibouti, Beau Travail is a film about masculinity, regulation and how they both swallow people up. Ashes (2012) Empire (2010) Blue (2010) Haiku (2009) Mobile Men (2008) Apichatpong Weerasethakul shorts A number of shorts by the Thai Filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Dealing with the recent political history of Thailand, spirituality and sexuality, Weerasethakul makes uniquely generous films about people and animals.
